Scallop Processors, new EU Regulations came into place on the 1st january 2006. Are you compliant? Changes in legislation means there is greater emphasis on end product testing in the food industry. For scallop processors this is especially important as you must demonstrate your product is compliant with end product testing requirements. For marine biotoxins processors must demonstrate that their product adheres to the following EU toxin level requirements. They must not contain marine biotoxins in total quantities (measured in the whole body or any part edible separately)
that exceed the following limits:
(a) for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP), 800 micrograms per kilogram;
(b) for amnesic shellfish poison (ASP), 20 milligrams of domoic acid per kilogram;
(c) for okadaic acid, dinophysistoxins and pectenotoxins together, 160 micrograms of okadaic acid equivalents per kilogram;
(d) for yessotoxins, 1 milligram of yessotoxin equivalent per kilogram;
and
(e) for azaspiracids, 160 micrograms of azaspiracid equivalents per kilogram. The consequences of not complying not only endangers human health, but from a commercial perspective may include: - Batch destruction and product recall
- Reprimands from EHO's
- Liability for prosecution
